This Hei Tiki has been carved from New Zealand Kahotea pounamu (greenstone/ jade)Â by Deane Moreton who is based in Hokitika, South Island.Â
The Hei Tiki is the MÄori representation of the human form and one's ancestors. Some believe that Tiki was the first man while others believe that he created the first man.
âHeiâ denotes an object or garment worn around the neck and âtikiâ is used to describe humanoid forms carved from pounamu (Nephrite jade), wood, bone or other materials
Pounamu is the MÄori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owners essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.
Kahotea Pounamu is a pounamu with white streaked or flecked.Â
Deane Moreton learnt his craft whilst working alongside his father in the family Pounamu/Greenstone business. Deane has over 30 yearsâ experience in sourcing and handcrafting New Zealand Pounamu and his designs are a blend of traditional and contemporary designs, inspired by Aotearoaâs rich culture and natural beauty.
