This beautiful Luke Jacomb Studio's cast glass, wall mounted Pīwakawaka is created using the "lost wax casting" technique. Each piece is handcrafted in Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, by a team of talented craftspeople.
Taking more than 24 hours to complete, every piece is slightly unique, bearing testament to their handmade nature.
With 30 years of experience, Luke Jacomb remains at the forefront of studio glass blowing both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Inspired by his time training in North America and Europe, and aided by his late father, John Croucher, Jacomb draws inspiration from traditional Venetian and Danish techniques, masterfully combining them with elements of the South Pacific to craft a uniquely New Zealand perspective in glass.
Launched from a garage in Newton, Auckland (Aotearoa New Zealand) in 2008 by renowned glass artist Luke Jacomb, Luke Jacomb Studio focuses on producing an affordable range of handmade cast and blown glass art and homewares.
Having adapted well to the changing environment introduced by human populations, the Piwakawaka is one of the most prolific and well-loved native birds in Aotearoa. With its distinctive fan shaped tail and energetic flying antics, it brightens urban gardens and dense bushland alike.
