This is a hand carved PÅ«tÅrino (bugle flute) made from kauri wood by Tim Codyre.Â
The pÅ«tÅrino is a flute unique to New Zealand. It has a mouthpiece at one end, and a larger hole in the middle. Played as a cross-blown flute, it is often said that the pÅ«tÅrino has both female and male voices. The feminine voice is believed to represent Hine raukatauri, the goddess of flute music, loved her flute so much that she changed herself into a case moth so she would never be parted from it. She is said to live inside her flute.
Tim is an Auckland based artist who became obsessed with woodcarving during his late teens. During his time at Elam art school, a lecturer introduced him to NgÄti Whatua master carver, Alan Nopera. This led to an apprenticeship in traditional whakairo carving. Tim went on to become the head carver on the Auckland Girlsâ Grammar School whare wÄnanga, Kahurangi ki Maungawhau. Which then led him to work as MÄori carving supervisor at the MÄori Community Centre in Auckland; which was run for over thirty years by Ana Tia. During his time at the centre, Tim had the privilege of training many young men how to carve traditional whakairo.
