This beautiful feather cloak with Aramoana Taniko band has been hand crafted by Contemporary Korowai Designs.Â
Aramoana, is a traditional MÄori weaving pattern and means Pathway of the Sea. The zigzag pattern represents ocean waves.
Brenda Janes, her whÄnau and her local community have been creating feather cloaks since 2018. In 2023, Brendaâs business Contemporary Korowai Designs, won the 2degrees Award for Best Small Business.
Encouraging people to embrace MÄori culture and to celebrate special occasions fills Brenda with pride. She understands how important and empowering wearing a cloak can be for whÄnau attending special occasions and events. These cloaks have developed into modern versions of Korowai, made to be accessible and affordable.Â
KÄkahu is the MÄori word for clothes but was also used as a general term when referring to MÄori cloaks. While Korowai is perhaps the most common term these days, traditionally it refers to one particular type of cloak.
MÄori identified several different types of cloaks that were made and worn at different times in the past.
Using native bird feathers is no longer a sustainable practice these days so Brendaâs team use high quality feathers from chickens and roosters which can be permanently dyed in various colours.
These cloaks are hand crafted by Brendaâs dedicated team in her workshop based in Wainuiomata, Wellington region.
