Description

This beautiful feather cloak with Whanake Taniko band has been hand crafted by Contemporary Korowai Designs.
The Whanake was designed by Brenda’s brother-in-law Horace Taiapa and is based on the teeth of the niho taniwha. It was named Whanake by his daughter Ani, and it means to grow and develop.

Brenda Janes, her whānau and her local community have been creating feather cloaks since 2018. In 2023, Brenda’s business Contemporary Korowai Designs, won the 2degrees Award for Best Small Business.
Encouraging people to embrace Māori culture and to celebrate special occasions fills Brenda with pride. She understands how important and empowering wearing a cloak can be for whānau attending special occasions and events. These cloaks have developed into modern versions of Korowai, made to be accessible and affordable.

Kākahu is the Māori word for clothes but was also used as a general term when referring to Māori cloaks. While Korowai is perhaps the most common term these days, traditionally it refers to one particular type of cloak.
Māori identified several different types of cloaks that were made and worn at different times in the past.
Using native bird feathers is no longer a sustainable practice these days so Brenda’s team use high quality feathers from chickens and roosters which can be permanently dyed in various colours.
These cloaks are hand crafted by Brenda’s dedicated team in her workshop based in Wainuiomata, Wellington region.
